Free Source of Information on Smallest Companies

Smallcaps.co.nz has been launched as a free source of information and research on the smallest companies of the New Zealand share markets.

Among the information provided on the website (http://www.smallcaps.co.nz) is summary financial information; with ratios and key figures, as well as share price info, and a description of the company, all provided in one user friendly report.

Smallcaps.co.nz is owned and operated by Small Cap Research Limited, a company founded by Massey University Graduate Student Callum Thomas. "I noticed there was a void in the provision of low cost information on some of the smaller companies. Often these companies don't get much coverage, a lot of them don't have online financial statements and some don't even have a website."

As well as covering the smallest companies of the NZX markets (the NZSX and the NZAX), coverage has also begun on some of the companies that trade on the unlisted trading facility, and a sub domain http://unlisted.smallcaps.co.nz has information exclusively on these companies.

Beyond providing the basic research reports there is also a number of other features on the smallcaps.co.nz website including tables that rank useful ratios and figures such as ROE and EPS. There is also an education section, which features articles on finance and investing.

Another feature of the website is the newsroom which lists links to news articles on the companies featured on the website and brief summaries, updated daily. As well as that there is a forum for a more interactive component.

The key idea of the website is provision of facts and information, and companies featured on the website have been invited to confirm their details and provide feedback, however most of the information is gathered from the annual reports of the companies, as well as any other supplementary information and websites.

The name smallcaps.co.nz comes from the term "small cap" which refers to small market capitalisation or market value, which in simple terms means the smaller companies listed on a stock exchange, however some companies on the website could be referred to as micro caps or nano caps.

Looking forward the agenda is keeping the information up to date, expanding education resources, and enhancing the usefulness of the website as a key reference in investment research and decision making. Also under development, and initial stages of test marketing, is a more advanced research report that is more comprehensive in depth and breadth.

In the mean time smallcaps.co.nz is rapidly becoming known as a key resource for New Zealand investors and from feedback received to date is set to become a pillar of the online finance and investing community.
