Turbo Diesel added to V50 range

Turbo Diesel added to V50 range

22 February 2007

Volvo has added a strong performing turbo diesel model to its V50 wagon range.

The V50 D5 with 132 kWs and 350 Nm of torque between 1750 rpm and 3250 rpm complements the two petrol engined models, the 125 kWs 2.4 litre and the 162 kWs turbocharged 2.5 litre.

Like its V50 range siblings, the V50 D5 has a five cylinder engine with advanced four valves per cylinder technology.

Apart from its lively performance - it can reach the legal speed limit in 8.6 seconds - the V50 D5 has an overall fuel consumption of 7 litres per 100 kilometres (40.3 miles per gallon).

"The modern diesel engine provides an excellent alternative and in many ways is better than a petrol engine" said Wallis Dumper, the Managing Director of Motorcorp Distributors Ltd, the New Zealand importer of Volvo cars.

"Whilst hybrids and bio-fuels are the popular talk, a diesel provides Kiwi motorists with a best value option that can deliver a fantastic driving distance on each tank of fuel.”

And the motor is as environmentally friendly as they come, meeting the latest Euro4 and North American ULEV 2 emission standards, with its diesel particle filter.

The engine is mated to a five speed adaptive, geartronic automatic transmission which can be used manually, driving the front wheels.
Apart from it load carrying capacity; the Volvo V50 D5 is rated to tow a useful 1500 kgs.

It sits on 16 inch alloy wheels shod with Pirelli 205/55 R16 tyres and has front and rear fog lights, as well as height adjustable headlamps. Roof rails add to its potential load carrying abilities.

Inside the V50 D5 there are Dala sports front seats, while the rear seat has a 60:40 split folding back rest. Like the other V50 models, the controls for the audio system and climate control air conditioning are grouped on the centre stack and are easy to use.

The six speaker CD system also has its main controls repeated on the steering wheel for ease of operation.

The dual zone climate control incorporates pollen, dust and exhaust filters.

Other features include cruise control, electric windows and mirrors, centre console stowage areas front and rear and illuminated vanity mirrors and map lights.

The V50 D5 has an impressive array of safety features. The chassis package to prevent an accident includes stability and traction control, anti-lock braking with electronic brake distribution and electronic brake assistance.

Features designed to prevent the occupants being injured in an accident include progressive action front airbags, cabin length curtain airbags, a side impact protection system and a whiplash protection system with head restraints, while all the three point seat belts have pre-tensioners.

Integrated child safety booster cushions are built into the rear seat which splits 60:40 for a versatile extension of the load area which has a cargo security blind.

Security is handled by a remote control central locking system which includes an alarm and engine immobiliser, while homesafe and approach lighting provides added peace of mind.

Like all Volvos, the V50 D5 comes with a three year unlimited kilometres warranty, a seven year anti-corrosion warranty and a three years roadside assistance package.
