NZ Gardener declares war on weeds

Waging an endless war against weeds? Arm yourself with the March issue of NZ Gardener for all the ammunition you need to attack twenty of the worst offenders. From lawn daisies to oxalis, the magazine’s panel of experts have put together a firing squad of effective weed control solutions.

“The most common question we’re asked by readers is how do I kill weeds – and stop them coming back,” says editor Lynda Hallinan. “If you don’t want to spend all weekend weeding, we have expert tricks and organic options to make the job easier.”

Once you’ve dealt to your weeds, you’ll also find plenty of planting ideas and seasonal inspiration in the March issue of NZ Gardener. A quirky Banks Peninsula garden, filled with eclectic objects and romantic cottage flowers, is featured as the South Island Garden of the Month.

In stark contrast, a contemporary Kapiti Coast garden designed by Jon Lambert has been named as the North Island Garden of the Month.

As her inner-city self-sufficiency project continues, editor Lynda admits to foraging for food on the streets. Food editor Alessandra Zecchini gets creative with potatoes and kumara, Ruud ‘The Bugman’ Kleinpaste chirps about cicadas and designer Paul Thompson has expert advice for low-maintenance gravel gardens.

NZ Gardener's top garden tips for March:
- Save your own seeds. Let your best beans ripen until the pods are dry and allow a few basil and coriander plants to set seed for free crops next summer.
- Plan ahead for hearty winter veges. Sow cold-tolerant crops like 'Bloomsdale' spinach, Chinese cabbages and 'Rouge D'Hiver' lettuce.

The March issue is on sale from Monday 26 February and retails for $6.80.
