Holcim Pleased At Early Response To Weston Option Cement Plant Notifications

Holcim (New Zealand) Ltd has received a good level of interest from the public this week following the notification on 20 and 21 April of the resource consent applications for its Weston Option cement plant.

“Now we are in the submission period, we are getting people calling our 0800 number or emailing us asking for more information. We are encouraging local people to have their say and make a submission on the cement plant proposal, and want to ensure they have adequate information to do that,” says Paul Commons, Manager Strategy and Development for Holcim (New Zealand) Ltd.

Holcim has provided full printed copies of the four-volume ‘Weston Option cement plant Assessment of Environmental Effects’ to the Otago Regional Council and Waitaki District Council, as well as providing a copy to the Oamaru Library and will have copies available for public viewing at its Information Centre in Oamaru.

“We have also sent the full printed version of the AEE to a number of key local community groups and societies, as well as distributing a CD-Rom version of the AEE to a wider group of people who had asked for the information.

“We have been pleased to provide this information to everyone who has requested it which we see as part of our role to encourage informed and intelligent resource consenting submissions.”

The Holcim Information Centre (126 - 132 Thames Street, or corner of Eden and Thames streets, Oamaru) will open every Wednesday (between 11am and 6.30pm) beginning Wednesday 2 May 2007, and will operate throughout the 40 working day submission period (which closes on Tuesday 19 June).

Holcim staff will be at the Information Centre on those days and will be able to answer questions that people may have, as well as provide detailed information from the AEE, if required.
