Aquaculture New Zealand welcomes Government commitment

8 May 2007

Government’s announcement today of a project to facilitate research and innovation around new aquaculture species and technologies in both existing and new aquaculture space has met with industry approval, says chief executive Mike Burrell of the new industry entity Aquaculture New Zealand.

“Our Aquaculture strategy emphasizes the fundamental importance of research and innovation. Aquaculture has an exciting future and its good news to have the go ahead on this project so that we can continue to build for the future,” he said.

An Industry-Government Forum is being established to drive the implementation of the Aquaculture Strategy which includes representatives from the aquaculture industry, key government departments, and councils.

The government has worked with regional councils to support increased innovation in the use of existing space through appropriate regional coastal plan provisions. Work underway in Waikato to allow experimental aquaculture on existing farms is a good example of this.

“We congratulate Environment Waikato for their innovative approach to sustainable aquaculture. We’re keen to work with other Councils through the Regional Chief Executives Forum and ensure that New Zealand can maximise the potential of this vibrant and future-oriented industry,” Mr Burrell said.

The launch of the new entity, Aquaculture New Zealand, in Nelson on 7 June will also provide the forum for the Prime Minister to announce the government’s official response to the Aquaculture Strategy.
