NZ Listener flies high at Qantas Awards

NZ Listener has been voted Best News-Stand Magazine at the Qantas Media Awards 2007 and the magazine’s writers have won six other awards

The Listener was also a finalist in the Magazine Cover category.

Features editor and the Black Page columnist Joanne Black won the Best Editorial Writer and the magazine itself Best News-Stand Magazine.

Political columnist Jane Clifton has two wins, best columnist and the politics sub-category for Metal Fatigue in an April 2006 Listener. The article questioned whether or not Labour’s political engine needed an overhaul.

Deputy editor Denis Welch’s The Disarming of New Zealand article in a May 2006 Listener won Best Government, Diplomacy & Foreign Affairs sub category of the Magazine Feature Writer section. The article questioned how much honour we are paying our veterans.

Former Listener writer Nick Smith won the General sub-category of the Magazine Feature Writer section with a cover story titled Get Smart in a May 2006 edition.

Pain in Paradise by Sarah Barnett won her the Pacific Islands Issues - Pacific Cooperation Foundation Award. The May 2006 article examined the aids crisis in Papua New Guinea where the World Health Organisation has declared the disease a generalised epidemic.

New Zealand Listener editor Pamela Stirling paid tribute to the hard work and creativity of its staff.

“A couple of years ago we sat down and worked out how we could honour the past but move forward to create a magazine that responds to what our sophisticated, influential readers want – compelling stories with insight , that bring a New Zealand perspective on the world.
