Award-winning designer joins NZ Gardener magazine

NZ Gardener is thrilled to announce that Kiwi gardening personality and multi award-winning landscape designer Xanthe White has been appointed as its new design editor.

NZ Gardener, judged Supreme Magazine of the Year at the 2007 Magazine Publishers Association Awards earlier this month, now features a revamped design section with expert advice each month from Xanthe.

“Xanthe, who won silver-gilt for New Zealand at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show in London last year, is one of our most talented young designers. She has also won gold at Ellerslie with crowd-pleasing gardens, and I know our readers will love her inspired ideas and down-to-earth approach,” says Lynda Hallinan, NZ Gardener editor.

In the June issue of NZ Gardener, Xanthe offers ideas to liven up dreary winter gardens with the creative use of garden art and sculpture. She also reveals her pick of the ten best plants for artistic landscapes and offers design solutions for readers’ backyards.

“Winter gardens need all the help they can get so we’ve also got colourful planting ideas to beat the winter blues. Despite the weather, winter is actually the best time to plant trees and shrubs and if you’re looking for instant floral colour, you can’t beat camellias,” adds Lynda.

Versatile and easy-care, camellias start flowering in autumn and continue right through winter. The June issue features 20 top varieties, plus planting tips and the opportunity to win the dazzling new variety ‘Silver Column’.

The issue also celebrates Arbor Day on June 5 – which traditionally marks a day of tree planting – with practical tips from experts Dr Tim Jenkins and Neil Ross.

The North Island Garden of the Month honour goes to renowned bird painter Miranda Woollett, who has created a tranquil haven in the Akatarawa Valley near Upper Hutt, while Jackie Flood’s stunning hilltop garden at Takamatua, near Akaroa, is the South Island Garden of the Month.

The June issue of NZ Gardener is on sale from Monday 28 May at all good retailers and bookstores for $6.80 (RRP).
