Discovery 3 conquers

31 May 2007

Land Rover’s Discovery 3 has topped a four-way comparison against its German SUV rivals in a test run by the British magazine WhatCar.

All four vehicles were diesel-engined models, with the Discovery 3’s smooth ride, off road ability, generous specification, roomy cabin and family friendly features getting it the nod over the BMW X5, Audi Q7 and Mercedes ML.

WhatCar said the Discovery 3 had the best ride of the quartet and its 2.7 litre V6 turbo diesel engine was quiet and refined. The magazine liked the commanding view from the Discovery and it’s simple to use controls and all-round practicality.

The large load space with the third row of seats folded flat was also applauded. While the third row seats were the most commodious for adults when being used. “Overall the Land Rover is the most family friendly car,” said WhatCar. “It’s the only one that will carry seven adults in comfort.”

Off road the Discovery 3 won hands down with a full range of electronic all terrain driver aids with its 4WD system. “It’s a true go anywhere vehicle,” said WhatCar. “It will leave the others floundering if you venture off road.”

“The ride is superb over the potholes of the urban landscape or clambering up the north face of the Eiger with the standard fit air suspension.”

Discovery 3’s raised driving position, upright windows and flat bonnet provide the best view and make it surprisingly manageable in tight parking spaces, said the magazine.

Overall it is the most family friendly car with larger door openings making access easier, and plenty of storage spaces to house clutter.

The Discovery 3 retails in New Zealand from $99,990 and is available with both petrol and diesel engines.
