Realizable emission cuts target welcomed
The G8 agreement that will consider cutting carbon emissions in half by 2050 offers a realizable target that New Zealand should endorse, says Alasdair Thompson, chief executive of the Employers & Manufacturers Association (Northern).
"The G8 has recognised that for the world to achieve useful cuts in carbon emissions, all the world's nations must sign up to them," Mr Thompson said.
"The world's biggest emitter, the US, did not sign up to the Kyoto agreement which also left out other major countries such as China, Brazil and India.
"New Zealand business would respond positively to a target such as that under consideration by the G8 since it would ensure our competitive advantage was not damaged with the consequent loss of jobs and opportunity."
