Nominate a business for community contribution

Westpac Manukau Business Excellence Awards Media Release
11 June 2007 - For immediate release

Nominate a business for Manukau’s most prestigious community contribution award

Every year businesses get better at ‘giving back’ to their local community, says Janis McArdle of the Manukau Community Foundation.

“There are members of our business community who have a great amount of respect and consideration for the wider community and that is reflected in the way they run their businesses and focus on giving something back.”

She wants the public to nominate companies and business people in a special category at the Westpac Manukau Business Excellence Awards designed to recognise community contribution.

“People do good deeds for many reasons, sometimes it’s important to their business model, and sometimes it is because they feel a strong sense of community responsibility.”

She cites Ken Stevenson, QSM, as an example of somebody with absolute focus on helping the community. One of last year’s recipients of the Manukau Community Foundation Contribution to the Community Award at the Westpac Manukau Business Excellence Awards, Ken is chair of the Greater Auckland branch of Habitat for Humanity, the New Zealand Housing Foundation, and the Adventure Specialities Trust, charities which make significant contributions to the wider community.

Reay and Brian Neben from the Times Newspapers were also recognised last year for their 30-year span of involvement in local activities including the Howick Santa Parade, the Pine Harbour Food and Wine Festival, Howick in the Park, and numerous charity regattas.

“In this case, getting involved with community events and charities is a natural fit with their local publishing business,” says Janis. “The Nebens have made benefiting the community one of the reasons for their success in business.”

“If you have benefited from a company’s good deeds, or observed a business that is actively involved in the community, we urge you to nominate them,”says Janis McArdle.

She says that any member of the public can make a nomination by completing a
one-page form which are available online at www.bizawards.co.nz or by phoning Enterprising Manukau on 09 262 2244.
