Works Infrastructure joins New Zealand’s first water industry contracting alliance

Auckland, New Zealand: Downer EDI’s infrastructure division, Works Infrastructure, today announced it had won the tender to join the Clear Harbour Alliance to separate stormwater and waste water in the Motions South catchment area of Auckland.

Based initially in the Mt Eden Kingsland suburbs, the three year NZ$50 million project involves building new stormwater and waste water pipes and eliminating overflow structures for Auckland City Council’s water utility company, Metrowater. This will stop waste water being discharged directly into the Waitemata.

Works Infrastructure Chief Operating Officer, Peter Reidy, said his company was delighted to be part of New Zealand’s first water industry alliance because, in recent years, Works had made significant investment in its capability to participate in alliances and assist clients with the management of complex projects and assets.

“Alliances are the future for managing complex projects and for managing the impacts of infrastructure projects on communities.

“This alliance will assist us to make long term investments in people, intellectual property and equipment so our clients will get the benefits of better risk management, but also greater levels of creativity and innovation,” Mr Reidy said.

Metrowater chose an alliance contract structure primarily to enhance the
co-ordination of skills and capability and lessen the impact of the project on the local residents and community. The Motions South catchment includes 1800 residential and commercial properties south west of the Auckland CBD near Eden Park.

“Works Infrastructure is well placed to undertake this work with its extensive experience in infrastructure maintenance and management, which includes roads, storm water run-off and waste water,” Mr Reidy said.

Members of the alliance include Metrowater, Works Infrastructure, GHD Consultants and Opus International.

Works Infrastructure (Works) is a leading New Zealand infrastructure provider delivering engineering solutions in the transport and waste water sectors. Works employs more than 2,400 New Zealanders with sales in excess of NZ$620 million. Works has significant representation in almost every New Zealand community. Works is wholly-owned by Downer EDI, one of Australia's largest listed engineering, infrastructure and resource services companies.
