Chris Yates Wins Award For Building The Hukawai Glacier Centre
Franz Josef’s newest tourism venture, the Hukawai Glacier Centre, has just won the Westland RMB (registered master builders) commercial project of the year award. Built by Chris Yates Builders Ltd, the award is in recognition of excellence in workmanship, construction practices and innovation.
“The building is an interesting form; with raking walls, out of parallel plan and high ceilinged spaces” says Chris Yates “this was a complex and challenging construction project, which we were pleased to be involved with.”
The building was designed by local architect Gary Hopkinson. The design for the building was inspired by the environment that surrounds the small tourist town of Franz Josef. It was created to be aesthetically pleasing while still maintaining functionality for the two unique products within the centre.
“It is very satisfying to see it complete, and should be an excellent facility for the Glacier Region.” Said Yates.
The centre, now in its 5th month of business, incorporates an indoor ice climbing wall and glacier exhibit, offering visitors an all-weather, indoor glacier experience.
