A bird is worth a
thousand words
The birds have flown in to nest at Rolleston Square.
Nestled above Aaroma Café, Ladbrook artist Allan Coleman’s latest work – a trio of eye-catching wire birds – quietly watch over the new Rolleston centre.
With a life-long love of birds, Coleman was inspired by a holiday trip to the albatross colony in Dunedin and a kayaking expedition in the Lyttelton Harbour, where he saw mollyhawks protecting their chicks.
He said the work took three weeks to perfect. “It is a great feeling to have my artwork in the local arena. It’s great to get personal feedback from people.
“The Rolleston Square shopping centre with its focus on community, artistic design and ability to host community events is in my opinion, the way community shopping centres should be. I particularly appreciate the inclusion of public art that can be appreciated by the community.”
Rolleston Square property manager Nicola Bourke of H G Livingstone Ltd said it was only the first of a number of works of art to adorn Rolleston Square. “Public art of this quality adds to the warmth of the development – what Mr Coleman has created for this space is really special.”
Coleman has completed a number of public works over the past 15 years and numerous pieces can also be found in private homes and gardens in New Zealand and overseas. His next assignment is to complete several works for the annual fundraising exhibition at Flaxmere Gardens, 26-28 October this year.
