PacINET 2007 broadcast live on the Internet
PacINET 2007 will be broadcast live on the Internet from Honiara, Solomon Islands this week.
Considered the Pacific's leading Information and Communications Technology (ICT) event, PacINET is organised by the Pacific Islands Chapter of the Internet Society (PICISOC).
The meeting is being held this year at the Forum Fisheries Agency (FFA) conference centre in Honiara from the 15th to 21st August 2007, with the theme 'National ICT Strategy Building'.
"We recognise it is
difficult for people to travel to regional conferences,"
says PICISOC Vice-Chair and Internet Society (ISOC) Trustee,
Franck Martin. "We feel it is important to offer the option
for others to virtually participate."
Mr Martin, also
the ICT Specialist at the Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience
Commission (SOPAC), explains that a computer at the meeting
will capture audio, video and presentations, and stream this
information to a server provided by the Internet Society.
"This server relays the information to any online participant around the world," he says. "This is a unique experience which allows people with limited connectivity to participate remotely."
Mr Martin adds: "The software is provided by Marratech and is compatible with many platforms, such as Windows, MacOSX, Linux, and is used by companies such as Google.
"It is recommended to go first on www.marratech.com and download and install the software. The application will detect the audio and video capabilities of your computer. From the application's own web browser, you can then connect to https://marratech.webapps.isoc.org:8001/ to have access to the ISOC Auditorium where the conference will be broadcast live."

Some 200 local, regional and international delegates are expected in the Solomon Islands this week for PacINET 2007.
About 30 participants were sponsored to the meeting by Pacific Internet Partners (PIP), Pacific Islands Applied Geoscience Commission (SOPAC) and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat.
