Spring Cheer

New Zealand Gardener September Issue Out Now

Spring is in the air in the latest issue of New Zealand Gardener magazine.

In the September issue, Editor of the Year Lynda Hallinan is delighted to help get Kiwis back into the garden and on to the lawn.

New Zealand Gardener takes a look at the uniquely Kiwi relationship with lawns. Is it better to sow seed or lay turf? How do you care for your lawn through every month of the year? Or get rid of daisies and toadstools? NZ Gardener has the answers to create the most luxurious lawn in the neighbourhood.

As well as new shoots of green, spring prompts many flowering plants to display their beauty. Whether it's the understated elegance and stunning scent of Erlicheer or fragrant freesias, Fionna Hill has ideas for bringing that floral magic indoors.

In the latest issue, we meet an Otago grower who has revolutionised the breeding of deciduous azaleas. In paddocks around Tapanui, West Otago, three generations of the Hughes family have fallen in love with these magnificant shrubs. Their Blue Mountain Nurseries is home to more than 20,000 plants. NZ Gardener explores at the history of the nursery and the dedication required to develop 169 varieties of this stunning plant.

NZ Gardener editor Lynda Hallinan is certainly glad the days are lengthening - it will help her to see what she's harvesting for dinner every night. Two-thirds of the way through her year-long self-sufficiency project, she looks at what she's learned so far about urban food cultivation.
