Toll Tranzlink introduces critical care team for frozen goods – benefits for Christchurch and Palmerston North
Giving even greater commitment to eliminating the risks associated with the transportation of refrigerated commodities has seen the creation by Toll Tranzlink of a dedicated Critical Cargo Care team based in Christchurch.
Toll Tranzlink is New Zealand’s largest freight forwarding companies and GM Intermodal Operations; Mario Di Leva says the concept in setting up a dedicated team was to fully deploy advanced technology in the immensely important refrigerated commodity business.
“We want to manage cool chain integrity by increasing our power train services nationally. These are the specialist reefer (refrigerated) trains equipped with large on board generators that service our registered customers.
The decision to base the team in Christchurch was due to the South Island being an important origin for many of our refrigerated cargoes such as meat; fish, vegetables and fruit, but the team will have national focus.
“This is particular important because we are in the throes of rolling out four more power train services for the refer market. We will be running power trains to Palmerston North from Christchurch and from there we will have separate power trains to Auckland and to Tauranga.
These will run return services southbound for imported refrigerated cargoes, plus we will be adding a new service between Christchurch and Port Chalmers.
The new specialist trains underlined the growing importance of Palmerston North as a hub for refer cargoes, drawing upon a hinterland including the Manawatu, Hawkes Bay and Taranaki.
It also puts rail as a strong contender for the distribution of many imported cargoes such as frozen pork from the US and Canada and seasonal citrus fruits.
The team in Christchurch will be headed by Lindsay Morton Critical Care Cargo Manager and Mike Simpson Critical Cargo Care Manager operations.
