Fashionable Bottles Become Trash, “Fashion” Again

Media Release

Fashionable Bottles Become Trash Then “Fashion” Again

The thousands of PET Waiwera Infinity mineral water bottles consumed during this year’s 2007 Air New Zealand Fashion Week may themselves turn-up as fashion. Admittedly the clothing they are turned into is unlikely to be trendy or chic – if anything it’s more likely to be anti-fashion.

The distinctive light green bottles, which have won accolades around the world for their unique design, will be collected from this year’s Halsey Street event by Auckland-based Shargo Holdings. From there they will be broken down into a granulated form before being shipped overseas and turned into polyester fabric and clothing.

Polyester may not be fabric of choice for the fashion elite but this versatile material has gained worldwide acceptance since first being developed in 1951. Of course it’s hey day was during the 1970s when it was advertised as a ‘miracle fibre’ that could be worn for 68 days straight without ironing and would still not crinkle!

While few of the country’s leading designers will be hanging this year’s collections on this tag line, Waiwera Infinity company director, Fraser Brown, says he is sure they will be as pleased as he is that the bottles consumed during fashion week are being put to good use.

“Polyester may not be the fabric of choice for our designers but there is no doubting it has made an impact worldwide,” he says. “And we are equally pleased that the PET bottles consumed at Waiwera Infinity Thermal Spa Resort, where our water is bottled at source, are also collected by Shargo Holdings and turned in polyester, curbing unwanted wastage.”

Waiwera Infinity is proud to be a long-term supplier partner of Air New Zealand Fashion Week and equally proud of the awards its stylish bottles have won. Last year the new-look packaging earned the country’s oldest water brand (which dates back to 1875), New Zealand’s ‘Best Bottle Design’ at the 2006 NZ Juice and Beverage Awards while the sparkling offering was named ‘Best Sparkling Water’.
Waiwera Infinity also won gold medal for the “The People's Choice for Package Design” at the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Awards known locally as the ‘Water Olympics’ and ‘Best Bottle in Glass’ at the 2006 Bottledwaterworld International Design Awards in Italy.
