Celebrating Success In Avoiding Type 2 Diabetes
Celebrating Success In Avoiding Type 2 Diabetes And Beating Obesity
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
12 SEPTEMBER 2007:
With all the talk in the media recently concerning Type 2 Diabetes, obesity, and encouraging people to eat healthy foods to lose weight and increase wellness, New Zealand should be holding up role models and celebrating those who have successfully beaten the epidemic by making long term lifestyle changes and eating whole foods.
The thought of losing 110kgs would, to most people, seem unattainable but for 33 year old Rutene Davis of South Auckland it was a mountain worth climbing.
Two years ago and weighing a staggering 205kgs and pre-diabetic he already had a family history of Type 2 Diabetes and knew that without making a change to his life it was inevitable that he too would suffer from the condition and potentially the other complications associated with it such as blindness, kidney failure and loss of limbs.
But it wasn’t just about the health benefits, as Rutene’s everyday life had become severely hampered by his size. Things that many of us take for granted, simple, everyday things such as fitting a seatbelt, air travel, or finding a seat to fit in and not thinking that everyone is commenting on your size when you walk into a room were issues for him.
Rather than opt for costly invasive surgeries, medications, shakes or supplements, this inspiring metamorphosis was achieved by eating a balanced diet of natural, unprocessed foods, the support of weight loss company SureSlim, and the encouragement of his family.
After losing an incredible 110kgs Rutene has conquered his Everest and a whole new world has opened up to him and his family.
At his initial size the only exercise he could do was in the solitude of his backyard. Even walking from the front fence to the back fence was painful and he couldn't continue.
Now at 95kgs he’s enjoying being able to spend time with his son, they bike, walk and jog together, and even go to the local pools. “I have come to realise that no matter what exercise we do as long as we enjoy it that’s half the battle. Coming from the little exercise I used to do, to what I do now, I never thought I would say this, but I love to get out there and exercise. It means I get to spend more quality time with my son.”
“For the first time in my entire life I’m a ‘normal’ society size. The benefit of being able to sustain this lifestyle with my wife and son is giving me the confidence to do things outside of my comfort zone, and has given me a new lease on life.”
I will never ever go back to the old person that I sadly thought would imprison me for the rest of my life."
