Finalists Named for 2007 Sauvignon Blanc Awards

Media release for immediate use – 25 September 2007

Finalists Named for 2007 Christchurch Casino Sauvignon Blanc First Taste Awards

50 Sauvignon Blanc wines made from South Island grapes have been chosen to vie for the title of “Pick of the Bunch” at the Christchurch Casino Sauvignon Blanc First Taste Awards.

More than 150 wineries were originally invited to compete for the three major titles on offer in the annual event, now in its twelfth year.

All the entries were blind tasted by respected wine judge Terry Copeland, who had the task of choosing 50 to be considered for the First Taste Awards.

“It is always difficult judging the wines because of the extremely high calibre of entrants,” says Mr Copeland. “The awards are always very popular and keenly contested by quality products. It was a tough job narrowing the field down to 50 finalists.

“The quality of Sauvignon Blanc wines made from South Island grapes continues to impress on a national and world stage. At last year’s Air New Zealand Wine Awards, South Island Sauvignon Blanc wines took 19 of the 20 gold medals awarded to Sauvignon Blanc wines. A number of South Island Sauvignon Blanc wines have also gone on to do very well at international wine competitions.

“The First Taste Awards are a great opportunity to recognise the achievements of these South Island vineyards and the superior quality wine they produce”.

A panel of three renowned judges consisting of Jim Harre, Lynette Hudson and Chief Judge Terry Copeland will judge the finalists and present the First Taste Award and Gold Medals at a gala dinner at Christchurch Casino on November 1.

The finalist wines will also be considered for the Industry Showcase and People’s Choice awards.

Wine industry members and media will judge the Industry Showcase Award at a tasting evening at Diamond Bar.

The public has the chance to vote for their favourite Sav at Christchurch Casino during October, when they can taste any of the finalist wines for just $2.00 at Diamond Bar or the Grand Café.

Please see the attached spreadsheet for a list of the final 50 wines.
