Trophy Canterbury property for sale

Trophy Canterbury property for sale

A trophy Canterbury property sited in the heart of one of the best adventure playgrounds in the world is being offered for sale.

The Big Ben sheep and cattle station in the Rakaia Valley consists of 3418 hectares and is just over an hour’s drive from Christchurch and 40km from the ski-field town of Methven. Ten minutes drive away is the Terrace Downs Golf resort and the Tui Creek Farm Park. Coleridge Village, where significant development is occurring, is just west of the property, which is bordered by the Acheron and Rakaia rivers.

Big Ben is subdivided into 48 paddocks and 24 hill blocks, and has its own private lake. The property includes a 5-bedroom homestead, a three-bedroom cottage, a woolshed, workshop and shearer’s quarters.

“Properties such as these come along very rarely. This really is a stunning property from the business potential through to the recreational aspects it offers,” says Bill Whalan, director of Bayleys Canterbury.

The station has undergone significant development over the last few years. The main focus has been on fencing, capital fertilizer and repasturing. Stock numbers have grown from 7,500 sheep in 2005 to 8,200 this year and cattle from 400 in 2005 to 550 this year. In addition, 1000 tonne of fine chop silage, 300 bales of baleage and 500 large bales of Lucerne hay are made on the property. Water supply to the property is via wells and springs or creeks.

The main home has magnificent views to the Acheron river and the Big Ben range beyond. In addition to the five bedrooms, there are two bathrooms, a kitchen and dining area and a large lounge. The cottage, which is also made of brick, is apart from the homestead and has three bedrooms.

The private lake is set up for water foul hunting with permanent stands.

Big Ben is a substantial freehold station with the additional potential for alternative land uses. Offers are invited on the property before noon on December 6, 2007.
