AA workers suspend strike action
Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union members at the Automobile Association have called off their strike action for Christmas to ensure motorists are not left stranded over the holiday period.
However, the workers are not ruling out further action when negotiations resume in the new year after the association refused to make any significant improvement to their offer during negotiations today.
The AA has offered to increase its pay offer slightly but is still trying to remove long-service leave.
EPMU national secretary Andrew Little says the decision to suspend strike action over the holiday period makes sense.
“Both sides are pretty firm on their respective positions but with a commitment to resume talks early in the new year there is little point in continuing the industrial action at this time.
“These workers have had strong public support in their industrial action including a great public response to their pickets and they feel that they should repay that support by making sure there is proper holiday coverage for AA members.”
The EPMU and AA have agreed to resume talks on January 22, 2008.
