Top Australian award for Nelson furniture maker

Nelson furniture designer and maker David Haig has taken out the coveted Acquisition Award at Australian Wood Review¹s Studio Furniture 2008 exhibition.

The awards were announced at the exhibition opening on Australia Day, January 26. Australian Wood Review Editor Linda Nathan described David Haig¹s Signature Rocker in sycamore as nothing short of iconic: ³In fact it¹s close to being absolutely flawless in the beauty of its design and construction,² she said.

David Haig lives in Nelson and as well as designing and making furniture, teaches ongoing and short courses at Nelson¹s Centre For Fine Woodworking. He also does regular teaching stints in Maine, USA.

Studio furniture makers around Australia competed to take part in the exhibition that highlights their originality, skill and belief in the highest value usage of the world¹s dwindling resource of rare and precious timbers.

Fifty five pieces feature in the exhibition which is sponsored by Bungendore Wood Works Gallery, NSW, Australia¹s premier gallery for studio furniture and wood art. Cash awards were also presented to Peter McDonald (Towaninnie suite), William Matthysen (Clock 0143), Ferdinand Rocker (John Madden and Angus McDonald) and Warwick Wright (Zetna cabinet).
