North Island glass company Thermosash buys Bowden & Trent to expand its South Island operation

Prominent Christchurch glazier Bowden & Trent has been purchased by North Shore based Thermosash Commercial Ltd.

Chief executive of Thermosash David Hayes says the purchase of Bowden & Trent will help the company take advantages of a growing South Island economy.

“We have commercial glazing operations in Wellington and Auckland and have decided to extend that to Christchurch. The continued growth and future prospects of the region’s economy, based on tourism and dairying, gives us confidence that there will be numerous South Island construction projects in future that will require the specialist services we provide.

“To take advantage of that, we needed to mirror our operations in the North Island, where we own commercial glazing companies in the two major cities. We recognise Bowden & Trent as the best commercial glazing operation in the South Island in terms of personnel and skills, and we have had an excellent working relationship with them for many years.

“There is also an opportunity to invest further in the company to increase its productivity and efficiency, therefore enabling both Bowden & Trent and the wider Thermosash group to better service our South Island contracts, ” he said.

Bowden & Trent co-founder and managing director Alan Trent says the company will continue to trade as a separate entity, using the relationship with its new owner to increase the range of products and services it provides the South Island market.

“Bowden & Trent has played an important part in the Christchurch construction sector for the past 15 years. We have excellent business relationships with many builders, architects, project managers, developers and engineers, and have worked hard to develop a reputation for high standards of quality.

“Thermosash has recognised this reputation. We are confident that the relationship with our new parent company will enhance our service still further, to the benefit of the customers of both companies,” he said.

Thermosash has a staff of around 200 nationwide, and has been involved in a number of major South Island construction projects recently, including the new IRD building in Christchurch, Delegats Oyster Bay winery in Marlborough, and both Dunedin and Christchurch Airports. Formed in 1973, the company is New Zealand’s largest specialist window and curtainwall contractor and Australasian agent for a number of specialist glazing products and services Thermosash has also provided technical consultancy and specialist advice to clients in South Africa, India, Sri Lanka and Thailand.

Bowden & Trent employs around 20 staff and services customers throughout the South Island, specialising in glazing for commercial and residential construction projects, ranging from shopfronts to mirrors, balustrades and showers. Alan Trent will remain as manager of the company under the new ownership.
