Auckland District Law Society Focuses On Challenges With Lawyers & Conveyancers Act

The newly elected Council of Auckland District Law Society has, in recent weeks, been focussed on the challenges confronting the society with the impending changes resulting from the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006.

The new act is anticipated to come into force on July 1, 2008, although the Minister of Justice Annette King has yet to confirm that date.

Last year Auckland District Law Society members voted in favour of a proposal that would see district law societies folding all their assets and operations into a single national law society rather than proceeding with incorporation as envisaged by the act.

The essential elements of the One Society proposal was that New Zealand Law Society be run in two divisions – a Regulatory Division managed from Wellington, and a Representative Division managed from Auckland.

The Auckland District Law Society premises would be utilised as the Auckland office of New Zealand Law Society and the staff would manage the Representative Division of the national society.

While work has progressed on the changes required for the Regulatory arm of New Zealand Law Society, work has yet to be progressed on the Representative Division to be established in Auckland.

At recent meetings of the NZLS Board and Council, ADLS proposed that it proceed with the preparation of a Business Plan in relation to the management of the Representative functions. NZLS has agreed to the preparation of this plan that will be considered by the NZLS Board.

ADLS is also planning for possible incorporation of Auckland District Law Society in the event there is insufficient time to effect the changes required for the establishment of the One Society proposal.

Members are invited to discuss the issues involved in the One Society Plan and the implications of incorporation with members of the ADLS Council and Auckland members of the NZLS Council and Board listed below.
