New Energy Book a Resource for Policy and Planning

The New Zealand Centre for Advanced Engineering (CAENZ) has released a fully revised edition of its Energy Information Handbook, with the aim of supporting informed debate on energy policy.

First published in 1984, the Energy Information Handbook is the definitive guide to New Zealand’s energy resources and commodities.

Dr George Hooper, CAENZ’s Executive Director, says the handbook has been an exceptional information resource for more than 20 years, and there has been keen interest in the revised edition.

“We’re delighted with the interest we’ve received in this project and the support we’ve had from the many commercial and non-commercial organisations who we rely on for essential data and information,” he says.

“In the years since the second edition was published, the energy sector has undergone significant change, and so it’s no easy task to piece this all together. We’re indebted to a number of organisations for recognising the value of this research and making a commitment to it.”

In its third edition, the Energy Information Handbook contains entirely new listings on demand-side issues and storage, and there is a greater emphasis on resource depletion rates. All of the material is presented for the non-technical reader, with a focus on providing information needed for evaluating energy choices.

“Interest in energy issues is intensifying, and its crucial that the public is well informed,” says Dr Hooper. “It is heartening that there is still a commitment from some of the key energy sector organisations to making technical data publicly available.”
