Iconic NZ Publisher Wins Big

Magazine Publishers Association (MPA) Awards, Friday 30th May, The Langham Hotel, Auckland

29 Judges from a cross-section of media disciplines have rewarded New Zealand’s magazine industry at the annual MPA Magazine Excellence Awards, attended by 400+ publishing stakeholders and presented by Master of Ceremonies Paul Holmes (himself a recent radio and print award winner). This was the biggest ever magazine awards in New Zealand, with 366 entries and 130 finalists in 13 Awards – evidence that the magazine industry continues to grow from strength to strength.

17 different publishers (of MPA’s 60 members) made the finalists lists this year, but New Zealand Magazines, publisher of New Zealand Woman’s Weekly, NZ Listener, and Crème magazines, won most of the top Awards, including Category Winner in

* Magazine of the Year
o Lifestyle category (Crème)
o Mass Market category (NZWW)

* Editor of the Year
o Lifestyle (Crème)
o Mass Market (NZWW)

* Cover of the Year
o Mass Market (75th Anniversary Edition, NZWW)

* Designer of the Year
o Lifestyle (Jaimee Clapham, Crème)
o Mass Market (Julie Koberstein, NZWW)

* Journalist of the Year
o Mass Market (Aroha Awarau, NZWW)

* Columnist of the Year
o Current Affairs / News (Jane Clifton, NZ Listener)
o Mass Market (Sarah-Kate Lynch, NZWW)
and Highly Commended in

* Circulation Promotion of the Year Award (NZWW / NZ Listener)

In addition, a Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Jean Wishart, who retired in 1985 after 46 years at New Zealand Woman’s Weekly – 32 of those as Editor.

New Zealand’s longest-running weekly title (New Zealand Woman’s Weekly) celebrated its 75+ year legacy by
collecting Supreme Winner title in:

* Magazine of the Year (NZWW)
* Editor of the Year (Sido Kitchin, NZWW)
* Columnist of the Year (Sarah-Kate Lynch, NZWW)

The Awards were preceded by a conference day of seminars for the magazine industry. The conference theme was “Where Will Magazines be in 2013?” Approximately 150 magazine publishing staff attended the conference, the biggest gathering of the year for New Zealand’s magazine publishing industry, and the theme was hotly discussed. The conclusion is that New Zealand will continue to be one of the world’s most vibrant and energetic magazine markets, with an enthusiastic industry that is in very good shape.
