Plant a fruit tree this Arbor Day – 5 June
Planting a tree tomorrow (Thursday 5 June) to mark Arbor Day? NZ Gardener magazine is encouraging Kiwis to make it a fruit tree this year.
“Arbor Day is traditionally seen as a conservation celebration and a time to plant native trees, but in the light of rising food prices, we reckon a fruit tree is a better investment in your family’s future,” says editor Lynda Hallinan.
“Whether it be plums, persimmons, prunes or even pinenuts, you can save on your food bills and cut down your food miles at the same time by planting a fruit tree,” says Hallinan.
Arbor Day coincides with World Environment Day this year and, to mark the occasion, the June issue of NZ Gardener magazine features 100 favourite trees for Kiwi gardens – from fruiting trees to flowering trees and trees to attract native birds.
Hallinan says she’ll be planting a ‘Kaiteri’ feijoa tree. “It’s a newly released variety that was bred in Motueka for early season crops, even in cooler climates, with enhanced flavour.”
