MEDIA RELEASE 6 June 2008

Montana wins Supreme Pinot Noir Award

Montana Terraces “T” Marlborough Pinot Noir 2006 was the supreme award winner at the inaugural Discover Pinot Noir Awards announced on Thursday 5th June at the event held at Christchurch Casino.

The Discover Pinot Noir Awards recognise the extraordinary quality of Pinot Noir varieties made from 100% New Zealand grapes and highlight the excellence of New Zealand Pinot Noir.

An expert panel of three well respected wine judges, Terry Copeland, Jim Harre and Lynnette Hudson, completed their tasting of more than 60 high calibre Pinot Noir wines of which, six were chosen to be awarded a gold medal.

Montana Terraces Marlborough Pinot Noir 2006 and Stoneleigh Rapaura Series Marlborough Pinot Noir 2007 both received gold medals with the supreme award winning wine being Montana Terraces Marlborough Pinot Noir 2006.

An elated Patrick Materman, Montana’s Regional Winemaker was thrilled with the recognition, commenting, “We're delighted that amongst a serious line up of New Zealand's best Pinot Noirs, the Montana Terraces Marlborough Pinot Noir 2006 took the Supreme Award. This reinforces our belief that with the Brancott Terraces block, we have an amazing vineyard site. As the vines are maturing, each year the wines are becoming more complete, showing great concentration but also elegance and poise.”

“It's still early days for Pinot Noir in New Zealand, but already we're seeing glimpses of brilliance. In a number of regions, we're blessed with fabulous climate and soils to satisfy this most fussy variety. Most importantly, there is the passion, the obsession to make great Pinot Noir, for without this human element, great Pinot Noir would never be made,” says Patrick.

Montana Terraces Marlborough Pinot Noir 2006 RRP $35.95
Largely sourced from a stunning terraced hillside on the Brancott Terraces near the head of the Fairhall Valley, this flagship wine represents the finest Pinot Noir from Marlborough under the Montana label, Letter Series wine range. It shows intense concentration of flavours with complexity and a harmonious balance between richness of fruit and silky tannins.
