New Mt Eden Dymocks Owner Promises Books Galore In Store

After 10 hectic years in London, Caroline Rolls decided it was time to return home to New Zealand and start her own business.

A long-standing love of books drew her to the Dymocks franchise and, next month, she will officially become the owner operator of her own bookstore in Mt Eden.

The 110 sq m shop, at the south end of the village, will stock more than 8,000 books and employ up to 10 staff, mostly local residents.

Caroline, who lives nearby in Remuera, will run the shop with help from accountant husband Robert and input from two-year-old daughter Kate.

"When we decided to come home, we were looking for the right business opportunity - one that was very different from accounting," says Caroline.

"I really love books and the bookshops in the UK are fantastic. You could go in and get any title you wanted.

"When we came back though, I was looking for my first book club book and I couldn't find it anywhere until I went into Dymocks. They had such a good range and that's when we decided that was the business we should get into."

Caroline particularly enjoys contemporary fiction but admits to reading "a bit of everything".

"I love travelling so we'll be stocking plenty of travel titles, plus we'll have a good range of fashion, style, home, art, architecture and photography books.

"Also, as this an area with a lot of young families - including us - we'll have a strong children's selection, with a dedicated area just for them."

To make it easy for parents, the store will feature the 100 books every child should read - 10 per year from ages 0 to 10.

Dymocks general manager Andrew Howard said research showed the new Mt Eden store would attract customers from a wide area and expand the book sector.

"As well as local residents, the Mt Eden store will draw in people from surrounding suburbs and beyond. It will become a destination shop, bringing more customers into the village and helping to grow Mt Eden's retail market."

Dymocks Mt Eden will be open seven days from late August.
