New Eco- Fuel Supplier Based in Waterview

A new family-run, eco-friendly business has decided that Waterview is a perfect base. The Green Lucifer Company was set up earlier this year by Waterview residents Neil and Liz Redway. The company are selling sustainable, carbon neutral and climate friendly fuels in the form of wood briquettes (Lucifer Logs) and wood pellets for pellet stoves (Lucifer Pellets).

They source the materials used to make their fuels from 100% recycled wood waste that would otherwise be going into a land fill. This wood waste is collected and transformed without any additives or chemicals to make a sustainable fuel suitable for both domestic and commercial heating.

“Providing sustainable and carbon neutral fuel is very important to us.” explains Neil Redway, “With Lucifer Logs and Pellets, the quantity of carbon dioxide emitted during burning is the same as the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed by the tree during its growth, so we are not adding to global warming in the same way as perhaps gas or electricity.”

The family also has advice on buying traditional firewood; burning green wood (newly cut wood) is not good for the environment or for your pocket as it can contain up to 65% moisture. Most of the energy generated when burning green wood actually burns off the moisture from the wood rather than heating your home. This is why one of the most important jobs when buying wood for fuel is to ensure that it is well seasoned or dried.

The company have found that people who have already bought green wood are able to burn it in combination with Lucifer Logs to get a far better heat output from their fires. In fact Lucifer Logs have been independently certified at no more than 4.09% moisture, the driest on the NZ market, so they out perform traditional firewood by cost and or weight.

“We have also had people buy our wood pellets to use as cat litter or for the bottom of their hamster cages. The absorbency and the fact that you only need to replace the area that is soiled make it idea for pet owners – something we hadn't thought of when we started up the business!” laughs Liz Redway, who is expecting their second child in September.

And what does their son, Thomas (age 2), think of the business? Well, he adores watching the trucks come to deliver the pallets of briquettes and pellets prior to distribution, and loves to mountaineer up the stacked packs of logs, so I guess he thinks that the family business is just great!
