Auckland tourism operators took out nine awards – including the top prize - in Tuesday night’s New Zealand Tourism Awards, announced in Christchurch.

Magic Travellers Network, the flexible transport network for the independent traveller, won the prestigious Supreme Award 2008 for tourism excellence. Auckland-based Magic also took out the awards for Tourism and Transportation Services, Visitor Transport and Qualmark Tourism Mark of Quality Award.

Other Auckland winners included:

• Tourmasters South Pacific – Tourism Distribution services
• Air New Zealand Grab a Seat – Phillips Innovation Award
• The Langham Auckland - Green Globe Sustainability Award

Among the individual award recipients were William Goodfellow from ExploreNZ who won the PATA Young Tourism Professional award and Kiyomi Gunji from Southern Travel Holdings who received the Horwath Sir Jack Newman Award for service to New Zealand Tourism.

Tourism Auckland chief executive Graeme Osborne says the awards demonstrate the high level of quality and excellence in the tourism industry in the Auckland region.

“Our congratulations go to all the winners, particularly the Magic Travellers Network with their fantastic achievement this year,” he says.

“We look forward to the continuing success of the Auckland region at next year’s awards.”
