Opportunities to export horticultural products to New Zealand

In response to requests made by local producers of fresh and processed fruit and vegetables, Norfolk Island Minister for Commerce and Industry Chris Magri has sought information from New Zealand authorities about the procedures involved.

Mr Magri said today that he had received a detailed package of information from Viliami Fakava, Senior Adviser for the Pacific from the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Minister said that he had been advised that an import health standard was required for any produce imported into New Zealand.

The New Zealand authorities had provided copies of the relevant application documents, together with a very comprehensive guide entitled Importation and clearance of fresh fruit and vegetables into New Zealand.

“I believe that there are real opportunities for Norfolk Island producers to gain access to the New Zealand market”, Mr Magri said. “This is especially true in some niche areas where we are able to produce fruit and vegetables which cannot be grown in New Zealand, and in others where our produce is of a superior standard to that currently available there”.

Mr Magri said that in his view it would be necessary for local growers to work together with the Norfolk Island Government and Administration to apply for the necessary approvals, and possibly to seek agents or distributors in New Zealand. “There is potential for significant opportunities for Norfolk Island producers’, Mr Magri said.
