The lawyer redundancy count is going up, but some law firms are also expanding

LawFuel.co.nz Online Legal Jobs Site - Among the latest British firms to announce redundancies is Denton Wilde Sapte, which has announced up to 80 redundancies across most departments excluding competition, tax and probably insolvency areas.

The redundancies affect the firms international offices as well as offices at home.
The announcement follows other redundancy announcement from UK firms, including thoise from Leeds’ Foy Hayes, which is going into administration after most of its commercial clients went to another firm.

Howes Percival has made six redundancies. However the recession-lead business continues with firms like Slaughter and May and Freshfields are working hard trying to save the British banking system, Ireland’s Arthur Cox is working on the nationalization of Anglo Irish bank.

However not all is gloom and doom. In Moscow, Berwin Leighton has poached around 70 lawyers from a top Russian law firm, which is the first time a major British of US firm has combined with a Russian law firm. The move comes at a time when Berwin Leighton has simultaneously launched an Abu Dhabi office.

Also, CMS Cameron McKenna has set up a taskforce with the aim of finding a firm it can merge with in the UK.
