Video Conferencing – cuts travel costs, carbon friendly

Auckland , 3 February 2009 :

Clients at Centra Auckland Airport Hotel can connect with international colleagues without leaving town - or a carbon footprint.

In today’s climate of slashed international travel budgets and environmental awareness, harnessing video technology is an option that is growing in popularity, and the Centra’s technology capability is the quickest at any Aucklandhotel.

“With companies tightening belts and thinking of ways to work smarter to save costs, airport locations become an attractive proposition – less travel time and more importantly less travel cost than traipsing in and out to the CBD. Combined with our real-time video conferencing capability we are more fortunate than most hotels and conference venues during this period of cost saving,” says Rachel Leitch, Centra Auckland Airport Business Development Manager. “Conferences are a vital part of business and video conferencing is the perfect way to maintain ‘face to face’ communication despite travel and budget restrictions.”

The Centra’s technology upgrade is part of a recently completed multi-million dollar major refurbishment of the entire hotel. This includes new-look accommodation rooms with a focus on space and quiet, new restaurant, bar, lobby, business centre, ballroom and conference rooms.

With 22km of cabling laid throughout the hotel the Centra offers broadband in every accommodation and meeting room. Cat 6 cabling enables 1080 pixel, 24 frames per second video conferencing function rooms - putting it in world class standing.

“We are confident that the hotel’s new technology is second to none, making it the leading business hotel in the New Zealand,” says GeoffHaigh, Centra Auckland Airport General Manager.

“The cabling is the best you can get, we have a 10 GB pipeline its speed and performance is only limited by the size of New Zealand’s gateway. Countries such as Germany, Swedenand the United Stateshave much larger gateways and are much further ahead with this technology.”

Mr Haigh says the Centra’s technology is future proofed as each accommodation room has cables installed ready and waiting for Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) capability to be introduced to New Zealand.

“Again this will be of great interest to corporates who want to have video conferencing calls in the privacy of their own rooms.”
