WebGauge Makes Move on Students
Victoria University student develops a next-generation internet sharing and usage metering solution for student flats.
Welllington, February 27, 2009 – A Victoria University student has done what local ISPs and major hardware manufacturers have been unable to do, coming up with a practical solution to one of the major causes of conflict in a flat. Pei Huang, currently completing the final year of his Bachelor of Information Technology (BIT) degree has developed a next-generation internet usage meter which allows a flat to keep track of how much data each flatmate has used.
“After literally spending days searching for a product like this for my flat, I decided that since I couldn’t find it, I’d have to build it myself” said Pei, who founded WebGauge Solutions in mid-2008. Simplicity, ease of use, and keeping costs down were the driving forces behind the design of the system, which has taken nearly 9 months to develop.
WebGauge includes an high speed wireless router, which combined with a subscription service (costing around $5 a month) monitors the amount of data that each PC, laptop, Mac, iPhone, PDA, Playstation or other internet-connected device is using. The router will automatically start tracking data use for each device as soon as it’s connected, which then allows the user to assign that device to a given flatmate. Users can log in to the website and see graphs showing each person’s usage over the month, as well as look at more detailed information if they wish.
An additional ‘split-the-bill’ calculator is also included in the service, which allows a flat to enter the amount of their current month’s internet bill into the website, and have it work out how much each flatmate should pay based on the amount of internet each person has used. “With a bit of kiwi ingenuity we can take a common problem, a common networking device, and add value to it to help solve that problem”.
