Cheese company may move to Christchurch
Cheese marketing company Dairyworks is considering a proposal to move its Temuka factory to Hornby, Christchurch and has entered a period of consultation with its staff about the proposed move.
A significant period of sales growth over the past five years has meant that Dairyworks has outgrown its Temuka premises and has identified a need to move to larger premises that are closer to its markets, says Dairyworks chairman Graham Heenan.
“The significant limitations at the plant are affecting our productivity. On top of that, moving to Christchurch would significantly cut transport costs and time and would remove double handling,” he said.
Dairyworks currently employs 23 full time permanent staff in Temuka.
If the proposal to relocate went ahead, Dairyworks would work with the 23 permanent staff to consider their options, including relocation and redundancy, according to Dairyworks chairman Graham Heenan.
“There is no definite timeframe for the move to Christchurch. At this stage it is simply a proposal we have put to our staff and we are entering a process of consultation about the proposed move and the options open to them,” he said.
Dairyworks staff will be offered support services
and counselling from today on as they work through the
options available. Staff have until April 14 to provide
feedback to the company on its plans and the company’s
final decision will be announced on April
17.
