3 News Strengthens Viewing Leadership

3 News has increased its lead over One News in the key 18-49 demographic during April, compared to March.

3 News achieved a 32% audience share for the month, ahead of One News which suffered an 8% decline during April, dropping to 28%.

In Auckland, 3 News has won both the 18-49 (TV3’s target) and 25-54 (TV One’s target) audiences with a strengthening of audience share at One’s expense.

“This is an excellent start to the winter peak audience viewing period, with daylight saving having finished,” said TV3 Director of News and Current Affairs, Mark Jennings.

At 14% above TV One in 18-49 audience shares, 3 News has had its most positive audience boost for the year to date, indicating a strong viewing shift in favour of TV3.

In evening viewership, Campbell Live is beating Close Up in metropolitan markets (18-49) with a 19% share to Close Up’s 17% during April. This is a 10% improvement for Campbell Live from March.

“It’s great to see Campbell Live winning across Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin, and this is a credit to the hard working team on the programme,” said Mr Jennings.

Late night news programme Nightline has retained a healthy lead over Tonight, winning both the 18-49 and 25-54 audience shares nationally.

“Nightline is performing exceptionally well right across New Zealand,” said Mr Jennings.

In the early morning, Sunrise continues to grow from March figures in key demographics, with an impressive 42% increase in share of 25-54 year olds in Auckland and a 20% improvement in 18-49 Auckland audience share.

“Sunrise is getting some traction with urban audiences, and that is a very encouraging trend,” said Mr Jennings.
