New handbook to help kiwi businesses to sell on the Internet

Christchurch Internet marketing consultant Chris Mole has published a new handbook to help small businesses to sell more effectively through their websites.

‘Winning Websites for Small Businesses’ is believed to be the first handbook of its type written specifically for the New Zealand marketplace. It focuses on strategies to attract more visitors, leads and sales from small business websites.

Mr Mole says when a website is designed and optimised correctly, it will bring in new business faster and more cost-effectively than any other method of marketing. But he adds 95 per cent of New Zealand business websites are dismal failures at selling anything.

“The reality is, most websites are built by graphic designers and IT experts. These experts may be very good at what they do, but very few have any idea about marketing,” Mr Mole says.

“The result is, most New Zealand businesses are relying on ‘techies’ to help to sell on the Internet. It’s a fatal mistake.”

Mr Mole adds, the content on most small business websites tends to be written by the owner and added to “fill the space”, almost as an after-thought.

‘Winning Websites for Small Businesses’ is written for the unique needs of the New Zealand market, which differs from America, Australia and the UK, where most Internet marketing material is written.

“I have been studying the top Internet marketers from around the world since 2003,” Mr Mole says.

“I have distilled the important information from their marketing methods and discovered what works best here in New Zealand. For example, New Zealand buyers are generally turned off by the hype-filled approach that American Internet marketers are so fond of. But most New Zealand websites err too much to the other extreme. They are too soft in their sales approach.”

The handbook includes several real-life examples of New Zealand websites that are making money by following the principles outlined in the book.
