Good magazine celebrates!
One year, six major milestones and zero
emissions
Good magazine, New Zealand’s only guide
to sustainable living is one year old this month.
“Good has got off to a flyer,” says publisher Martin Bell. “The recession is hitting everyone hard but it makes sense that in tough times people are looking for a way to save money and re-examine their consumer lifestyles. That’s why Good is proving to be so popular.”
Good has notched six notable achievements in the last year:
Six award
nominations
Good has been shortlisted as a finalist in no
less than six categories in the forthcoming 2009 MPA
Magazine Awards:
· Magazine of the Year (Lifestyle & Mass Market)
· Designer of the Year (Lifestyle & Mass Market & Custom Publishing) – Adrian Clapperton
· Editor of the Year (Sport & Leisure, Lifestyle & Mass Market) – Francesca Price
· Best Use of Photography
· Best Launch/Re-launch
· Columnist of the Year (Consumer) – Rod Oram
2.
Donations
Through its subscription donation scheme Good
has donated more than $10,000 to six Kiwi charities,
including the UN Association of NZ, Habitat for Humanity,
BNZ Save the Kiwi Trust, WWF/Earth Hour, The Asthma and
Respiratory Foundation of NZ and Hospice
NZ.
3. Volunteer of the Year
Awards
Good launched the Intrepid/Good Volunteer of the
Year programme. Over 100 volunteers entered the awards
through a social networking web site. The field was narrowed
to 23 finalists and more than 3,400 people voted for the
five category winners. Bridgit Bretherton-Jones, a volunteer
with Preventing Violence in the Home, was named NZ Volunteer
of the Year at a gala event last week.
4.
New Zealand’s only carbon-neutral magazine
Good was the
first and remains the only Kiwi magazine that is certified
carbon-neutral. Working with independent provider Greenland
NZ, Good not only is produced on FSC-certified paper by
FSC-certified printers, it’s also actively offsetting its
footprint by purchasing government-approved VER offset
credits.
5. Hitting 11,045
circulation
Good clocked in a high first audited
circulation of 11,045 copies (ABC Total NZ Net Circulation
to 31/12/2008). Translated into readership, where one
magazine is passed on an estimated four to six times, the
readership of Good is estimated to be 44,000 to 66,000
people. An excellent result for a launch
title!
6. Business gets behind
Good
Business is buying Good. The Sustainable Business
Network recently added a subscription to Good as part of its
member benefits, after 80% of members surveyed agreed to
subscribe to Good. In total the companies that subscribe to
Good through the SBN and other business organisations
represent 43% of New Zealand’s GDP.
Says Martin Bell: “We’d like to thank all our supporters, including foundation advertisers, sponsors and subscribers. It’s always a risk backing a start-up. But we’ve been able to prove that Good really has delivered on its promises to create a new genre of sustainability media.”
Good was launched in June 2008 by HB Media, the magazine and book publisher behind Idealog, Inspire, AUT Media and the new owner of NZ Marketing Magazine.
