News Release

Dr Philip Leightley appointed to Southern Cross Hospitals Board

Auckland Specialist Anaesthetist, Dr Philip Leightley, has been appointed to the Board of Southern Cross Hospitals Limited.

Southern Cross Hospitals Chairman, Dr Harley Gray, says Dr Leightley’s appointment reflects the desire to have strong medical specialist representation on the Board of the expanding hospital network.

“We now have 10 wholly owned hospitals and seven joint venture facilities in the Southern Cross Hospitals network. Dr Leightley brings to the Board an in-depth understanding of those private hospital environments and, very notably, provides insight from the key field of anaesthesia."

Dr Leightley is a former founding shareholder and then director of the Auckland Surgical Centre which was purchased by Southern Cross in 2005. He continues to practice at Southern Cross ASC, as well as Southern Cross Brightside Hospital and Mercy/Ascot Hospitals, providing anaesthesia principally in the areas of orthopaedic, major general, cosmetic, reconstructive plastic and urological surgery in both day stay and in –patient facilities.

He is a past chairman of Anaesthesia Auckland and Anaesthesia Mercy Hospital, currently serves as a member of the Hospital Clinical Medical Committee at Southern Cross ASC and until recently the Anaesthetic Advisory Committee at Mercy Ascot Hospitals. Dr Leightley also has considerable experience in the contracting and negotiation process with ACC.

Southern Cross Hospitals Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Southern Cross Health Trust, a not-for-profit charitable trust. Southern Cross Hospitals operates independently and at arms length from health insurer, the Southern Cross Medical Care Society.
