Clifford Bay Tops International Wine Competition With Triple Trophy Win

The Clifford Bay Awatere Valley Sauvignon Blanc 2008 has been awarded three Trophy awards at the 26th International Wine Challenge in London. Trophies were announced on the 19th June, 2009. The Marlborough wine received the New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc Trophy, the New Zealand White Trophy and the highest accolade, the 2009 International Sauvignon Blanc Trophy.

The International Wine Challenge (IWC) is considered one of the world’s largest and most influential independent wine competitions. This year’s competition received over 9,500 entries from a record 41 countries. The rigorous three stage judging process involves more than 300 judges including Masters of Wine, winemakers, senior wine buyers and wine writers. Before the IWC Trophy results were announced, the 2008 vintage was one of only 12 Sauvignon Blanc wines awarded a Gold Medal from around the world.

The award winning Clifford Bay Sauvignon Blanc was made by winemakers Glenn Thomas and Stu Marfell from super-premium grapes grown in the Awatere Valley, reinforcing Marlborough’s position at the forefront of international Sauvignon Blanc winemaking.

The Vavasour Wine Company CEO, Peter Scutts said “Clifford Bay is one of the pre-eminent labels under our wing. We were delighted with our 2008 vintage and the Clifford Bay Sauvignon Blanc has been getting better and better.” He added “It’s great to see one of the world’s elite competitions, with an outstanding judging panel, recognising this.”

But Clifford Bay is no stranger to success having been awarded a Gold Medal or 5 Star for every Sauvignon Blanc since its first in 1997. The 2008 vintage had already been well recognised in New Zealand with its 5 star and Top Ten accolades in the Cuisine annual Sauvignon Blanc tasting.

Clifford Bay wines are sold throughout New Zealand and exported to Australia and the UK.
