NZ Gardener Magazine – Turns Green Into Gold

New Zealand’s top selling gardening magazine, which is inspiring more and more kiwis to grow their own, has snapped up the Supreme Magazine of the Year award at the Magazine Publishers Association Magazine awards this evening (June 25, 2009).

It is the second time NZ Gardener has won the award in the past three years.

The judges described NZ Gardener as “a remarkable success - busy and packed with information, just how readers like it.” They said it represented real value for money and was lively and approachable.

NZ Gardener’s most recent readership showed a massive 28% increase over the past year*. It is read by an average of 287,000 people per issue and has more than double the number of readers of any other gardening magazine in the country.

“NZ Gardener magazine has been around a long time and has always been a trusted companion for gardeners,” says Lynley Belton, General Manager Fairfax Magazines, “but it has flourished under Lynda Hallinan’s leadership as more and more people of all ages turn to their gardens for their livelihood, lifestyle and pure pleasure. They have looked to our magazine as the authority on how to make that happen.”

She says when Lynda set the challenge of living self sufficiently from her quarter acre section in Auckland’s inner city for a year, and actually did it, she gained a huge following. “The magazine has helped hundreds of novice gardeners while also delivering value to experienced gardeners with practical advice provided in the magazine, e-newsletter and in her blog,” Lynley says.

The judges described the magazine as an excellent example of building awareness through the use of on-line media, and of Lynda being “in there, boots and all”.
