More accolades for Queenstown pool project led by Bay firm
An $18M indoor aquatic centre in Queenstown has won yet another accolade for the multi-discipline design team led by a Hastings-based firm LHTDesign, the country’s leading pool design specialist.
Alpine Aqualand, built for the Queenstown Lakes District Council, was presented with a gold award and category win in the NZ Registered Master Builders’ Southern Region Commercial Projects Awards announced in Invercargill last week.
The project will now go on to compete in the national awards in the commercial Tourism and Leisure category later this year. To earn the gold award, the project was judged to be at least 80 percent higher than the industry standard. It was entered by Naylor Love Ltd, builders of the project.
To win, Alpine Aqualand beat competition including the Chinese Gardens in Dunedin, the new Mercy Hospital wing in Dunedin, and the Nevis Bungy Base building, among others.
Last year, the project (which opened in May 2008), took out two NZ Architecture Awards – one for Public Architecture and the other in the Resene Colour Award. It had been entered by ASC Architects, another member of the high-profile design team.
It also took out a Commendation award at the IES The Lighting Society for LPD Ltd, the firm responsible for lighting aspects of the project.
