New building consent law brings savings

New building consent law brings savings to Milestone Homes’ customers

Comment from Stephen Murray, General Manager, Milestone Homes

“Milestone Homes welcomes the introduction of a law to speed up the building consent process and believes that this move will help both the building industry and consumers.

“Milestone Homes offers 60 affordable house plans based on standardisation and simplification of the design and building process.  Multiple-use building approvals will greatly reduce duplication and fast-track the consent process for our customers, helping them to get into their new home sooner.

“The use of standard designs and optimised measurements across the Milestone Homes range, means that we are able to secure competitive buying rates from our supply partners and tradesmen, which we pass on to our customers. Now we will also be able to pass on any cost savings from the consent process, helping even more New Zealanders onto the property ladder with affordable, quality houses.

“Like many industries, the building industry is facing a difficult time and we appreciate any moves to make the consent process quicker and easier and reduce the burden that the current process places on our franchisees.

“The new law is a good first step towards much-awaited change in the building sector, but we agree with Building and Construction Minister Maurice Williams that there is more work to be done. There are many factors that contribute to the cost of a home including the availability and price of land, compliance costs and regulations, local council levies and fees and the cost of labour and materials. The Government and industry need to work closely to keep building costs down across the board and ensure that the process is streamlined to make it as easy as possible for people to build a home.”
