Rotorua hotels see benefits in new Aus air service

Rotorua hotels see benefits in new trans-Tasman air service

Rotorua region members of the New Zealand Hotel Council (NZHC) are delighted with the news that Air New Zealand has announced scheduled air services between Sydney and Rotorua commencing 12 December 2009.

Australia has consistently remained the second largest source of business into Rotorua hotels, accounting for around 12% of annual business, Rotorua region NZHC chairman Marcus Keenan says.

“We now see a real chance to strengthen this by growing new business opportunities not only into Rotorua but the wider Central North Island,” Mr Keenan says.

“Opportunities lie in wait for our Australian visitors to explore our lakes, geothermal fields, mountains, forests and beaches, to mention just a few of this region’s natural attractions. With such a diverse range of activities on offer in Rotorua and the Central North Island we should be able to keep our Australian visitors coming back year after year.”

Other positive opportunities for the region’s accommodation providers to build on include weekend short breaks, conference and incentive business, and sporting challenges, he says.

Rotorua Mayor Kevin Winters is inviting everyone in Rotorua to come together and help make these services the success that Rotorua deserves. Mr Winters says "every Rotorua resident can also play a role – even if it is simply by ensuring that every single visitor gets to experience ‘manaakitanga’ - Rotorua’s famous brand of hospitality".

Mr Keenan says local NZHC members agree with the Mayor's belief that Rotorua is about to move into an incredibly exciting new phase of very positive development.

“The future looks very bright indeed.”
