Prepare for the Zombie Apocalypse
Wellington Businesses have found a new way to cheer themselves up during the recession by welcoming in the Fun Side of Health and Safety.
Working Wise Ltd husband and wife team, Jeena Murphy and Mike Greer were fed up with the dreary image of health and safety. They’d been running their health and safety company for thirteen years and wanted to see more people engaged in safety.
“We decided to take the boring out of health and safety. We realised that if it was a product on a supermarket shelf, even we wouldn’t buy it,” says Working Wise director Jeena Murphy.
“Mention health and safety and you’ll be greeted by a whole lot of eye rolling and negativity. We are very passionate about health and safety and wanted others to share our passion. We started injecting some fun and humour into the work we were doing with our clients and they loved it,” says Ms Murphy.
So far their clients have experienced balloon popping(with ear plugs and safety pins) for prizes, designing their own Stickiwi™ signs, developing emergency plans for the zombie apocalypse, workstation assessments with reminder stickers and fiddle factor wind up toys, and manual handling training using Tim the Crane.
“Health and safety suffers from an image problem, and we wanted to change that. We decided it was up to us to take the boring out of health and safety.”
After some market research and several business courses, they relaunched Working Wise as “Welcome to the Fun Side of OSH”.
“Health and Safety should be taken seriously but there’s no reason why it has to be dry and crusty. Many people in the field of health and safety take themselves too seriously,” says Working Wise Manager Mike Greer.
“This is why we invented our safety ambassador Stickiwi™. We’ve incorporated him into our existing services and developed a new range of products around him. People have a good laugh with Stickiwi™ but there’s also the ‘oh yeah’ moment when they see how it relates to them.”
“Humour gets a message across far more effectively than lecturing or finger wagging. We want people to be engaged in making their workplaces safer. If you have to do something, you might as well make it fun.”
