An open invitation to Arrowtown South

The owners of the proposed Arrowtown South Zone are inviting members of the public to an open day on Sunday December 13.

The open day will be held between 10am and 2pm on the site, which is bordered by Centennial Avenue, McDonnell Road and the Arrowtown Golf Course. Access will be via the McDonnell Road entrance.

The open day is being held by the landowners of Arrowtown South with the aim of providing the community with a clear understanding of the proposed new residential zone, and to enable them to ask questions about the plan change process.

Car parking will be clearly marked at the entrance to the site, and there will be a free sausage sizzle.

Site orientation plans will be placed at a number of key locations around the site and visitors will be encouraged to walk around it and take away a booklet that summarises the proposal and the plan change process.

The landowners have spent nine months developing a masterplan for the site. The private plan change (Plan Change 39) has been lodged with the QLDC and is scheduled to be notified for submissions shortly.

The proposal is for up to 215 homes on 17ha of the land, the remainder of which will be split into 12ha of publicly accessible open space, and a 1ha community hub which will feature a village store, childcare centre and other facilities.

Arrowtown farmer Roger Monk, who is one of the site landowners, said re-zoning the land from rural to a new special residential zone would enable Arrowtown to extend towards its natural boundaries, surrounded and protected by a green belt of land that includes The Hills, Arrowtown and Millbrook golf courses.

Mr Monk, who will be on-site at the open day, said the aim was to develop a small community with a “real sense of place” rather than just another suburban development.

“It will be a quality development that I as a landowner and the future residents can be proud of,” he said.

“We’ll have narrow streets with grass verges and roadside trees in the style of the older parts of Arrowtown, walking and biking tracks, a beautiful wetland area and we’re not planning any buildings along the steeper area of the escarpment, because that would be too intrusive.”
