Law Prize Recognises Student's Hard Slog

Employment Law Prize Recognises Student's Hard Slog.

19 February 2010: University of Auckland law student Michael O' Brien put in a solid effort last year, that saw him proudly receive the 2010 Simpson Grierson Employment Law Prize at the firm's Auckland office today.

"We are delighted once again to celebrate our strong association with the University of Auckland Law School and to present this prize to the top employment law student," said Simpson Grierson partner Phillipa Muir, who presented the $1,500 cheque to Michael.

"The special thing about this prize is that it is rewards the consistency of Michael's performance - not just his exam."

This is the seventh year Simpson Grierson has awarded the prize and Bill Hodge, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Law, said the University was grateful for the firm's continued support of legal education and in particular, employment law.

"It's sustained. It's wonderful. And the contribution of the firm's legal practitioners, including Phillipa, is very significant."

Michael has another year of hard slog ahead of him to complete his law degree, part of which he will spend at the University of Indiana, after successfully applying for an exchange for the second semester. Not surprisingly, he hopes employment law will feature significantly in his future.

"It was the paper I enjoyed most and did the best in, so I would very much like to be an employment lawyer."

Simpson Grierson funded 14 student scholarships and two law prizes over the last year.
