Web Host to plant 1,000 trees

Auckland based web hosting provider OpenHost (www.openhost.co.nz) has introduced a new green initiative that allows its customers to off-set their web sites carbon usage by planting a tree as a part of the United Nations Environment Programme. With a goal of planting 1,000 trees on behalf of customers OpenHost hopes to establish itself firmly as the greenest choice for New Zealand web sites.

Customers that partake are entitled to plant a tree in a developing nation of their choice, and can display a “Green Web Hosting” badge on their web site.

With a substantial number of consumers looking for “green credentials” and the cost of going green still being relatively high for small businesses OpenHost customers are at a substantial advantage with most New Zealand hosting companies yet to embrace the green ethos.

OpenHost already utilises electricity provided by Hydro and Wind power and with the additional step of planting trees customers can be confident that they are not just off-setting their carbon usage, but positively contributing to the environment and developing nations.

OpenHost currently has over 8,000 customers and aims to have 1,000 trees planted by the end of 2010.
