Tower Insurance Embrace Business Mentoring

Tower Insurance Employees Embrace Business Mentoring Role

TOWER Insurance Marketing Manager, Debra Chantry, has become the first person from one of the country’s leading providers of business cover to become a fully fledged business mentor. She applied to become a mentor last month, after TOWER Insurance teamed up with Business Mentors New Zealand, the charitable organisation which provides a national business mentoring service to support the development and growth of New Zealand’s small to medium enterprises (SMEs).

‘I became a business mentor because I wanted to put something back into the local economy and community,’ explains Debra. ‘On top of that, I knew I would get a real buzz from helping people move forwards with their businesses. Often, all small business owners need is a fresh perspective from someone independent of the company. I’m looking forward to providing them with that and giving them as much valuable advice as I can.’

‘The Business Mentors service is a great resource for SMEs,’ adds Debra. ‘I’m proud to be involved and I’m sure it’ll be a hugely constructive learning experience, for both me and my clients.’

Debra has already been assigned two clients and will spend at least four hours a month with each of them. She will use her own extensive experience in marketing and business strategy to provide a valuable outside perspective, offer advice on specific problems and help each company pinpoint potential areas for growth.

Business Mentors provides access to 1,600 volunteer mentors (who provide their experience, skill and knowledge free of charge), and the focus is on developing capability, profitability, and employment generation. Since the organisation was established in 1991, Business Mentors has assisted over 50,000 small to medium businesses. It is funded largely by patrons from the private sector, with additional support from New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. It provides a mentoring service to businesses that have been operating for at least six months and is the owner's main source of income.
